Clearwater home takes top award This Clearwater home has won the Canterbury Registered Master Builders House of the Year supreme award for a new home. Built by Metzger Builders, it also won a gold award, the Carters new home $1-2 million category, and the Plumbing World bathroom excellence award. The judges said it was a standout home with outstanding features such as access to some rooms being concealed behind wall panels instead of traditional door openings. The winners were announced on Friday night at a gala dinner at the Air Force Museum in Wigram. Overall, there were 38 gold award winners from Canterbury which will now be eligible to become national gold reserve finalists along with homes from other regions. These will be announced in September.

Residents don’t want $3.2m for centre rebuild BY ANDREW KING

Would you turn down the offer of being given $3.2 million? That’s exactly what a St Albans community group wants to do, completely bucking the trend saying they don’t want the money to rebuild its community centre. The St Albans Residents Association has told city councillors that the $3.2 million allocated over a three-year period from 2016 to build a new community centre could be spent better.

City councillors Ali Jones and Pauline Cotter made the case for the money to be included in the Long Term Plan as that’s what the wider community had indicated they wanted. “What we are hoping to do is have another community conversation about what we want to do, Cr Jones said after hearing the submission from SARA. The new centre would replace the current set-up with a new modern building that serves as a community centre for the area.

SARA believes that the job can be done by utilising the old Lion’s building and another that was given to them from START, an organisation that provides counselling to victims of sexual crime, to form a community centre without the massive expense. SARA co-chairwoman Emma Twaddell thought that they had enough resources for the temporary centre. “We have a wonderful space that has been supplied by the Lions, she said.

Artist adds colour to memories – p4, p5

The building would help out hugely providing plenty of space for the community to assemble. Cr Jones said they had to move past the temporary stage and look towards the future which could include more than just a community centre at the site. “We need a planned purposebuilt community centre and we should look at having a swimming pool alongside that. • Turn to page 2

Only 10 acts stand in the way of Neil MacLeod and the crown of top solo artist at this year’s Smokefreerockquest. The St Andrew’s College student has made the cut and is in the final 10. There were 700 entries with finalists from 23 regions sending in their video footage for selection in the national final in Auckland on September 11. SFRQ founder and director Pete Rainey said selecting the national finalists was always a challenge. “With support from their schools, great role models on the Kiwi music scene and a lot of creativity and dedication, we’re seeing a very high

Vandals remove football equipment at Fendalton park BY ANDREW KING

Vandals removed goal posts and safety equipment put out for junior rugby at a Fendalton park. Christchurch Football Club coach Hamish Jenkins had put the pads on the goal posts and the corner flags out on Friday night. When his wife, Justine, arrived at the ground prior to the under8s kicking off – she discovered that not only were the flags and padding gone – the goal posts had been ripped out of the ground as well. “They [vandals] had removed the goal posts and thrown them in the river behind the park as well as the pads that floated away,” Mr Jenkins said. “My wife managed to retrieve all four pads. “We are still missing five out of six corner posts.” The sixth flag is wedged in the top of a rather large tree on the park boundary. It took her a couple of hours to

retrieve the pads and goal posts which have since been returned to their rightful positions. “It’s just a waste of time,” he said. “I have asked people along Waiwetu St but they didn’t see anything.” Mr Jenkins said they would be happy just to have the corner flags returned. “We just want the gear back if possible. “Until I get it down [the flag in the tree] it’s the only flag we have got.” Junior club captain Tony Hussey said that it was unfortunate that this had happened and that nothing like this had really happened to them before. “One year we left the gear out all season and it wasn’t touched,” he said. “Hamish was doing a good thing by putting them out early.” If anyone knows where the missing flags are they can phone Mr Jenkins on 021 536 562.

Award for church

The Uniting Church in Knowles St, Papanui, has been crowned top sustainable community garden in the Edible Garden Awards for the second year in a row. Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said the board is committed to encouraging the growth of localised food production by holding the awards. “Our active and ongoing support for activities and initiatives around edible gardens and fruit forests is helping to build strong and resilient communities,” he said.

Request to remove trees The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has received a request to remove two oak trees and one tulip tree on Bryndwr Rd. The request for removal is due to residents’ concerns regarding the impact of shading, tree roots and leaf litter from the trees on their property due to the location of the trees and size of the canopy. The board wishes to determine the views of nearby residents and property owners prior to considering this request. Submissions for it will close August 4.

Merivale butchery looking to be a champion

Telco licence decision

The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board will decide this week if they will approve the granting of a further telecommunication licence agreement to Spark and Vodafone for a term of up to 12 years over an area of approximately 80 sq m at 345 Memorial Ave. If they do they will authorise a property consultancy manager to negotiate, conclude and administer all further terms and conditions of the lease agreement.

Traiteur of Merivale has been nominated for a Champion Retail/Hospitality award in this year’s Champion Canterbury Business Awards. It will compete in the small business category with the winner being announced on September 16. Owner Maarten Loeffen said that it was great to be recognised for all their hard work. “The only way you can really be different is to exceed the customers’ expectations,” he said. “We have a sort of community thing going so you can come in and have a chat while you shop.”

Artist adds colour to childhood Artist Gaby Reade has been into art for as long as she can remember. Now she is going back to her childhood, illustrating some original Brothers Grimm fairy tales. She speaks to Bridget Rutherford So Gaby, can you tell me a bit about yourself? Well I immigrated to New Zealand in 1986 from Germany and have lived in Christchurch ever since. I’ve been in Heathcote Valley for 20 years now. I live in a tiny cottage and I have a studio down in the garden which is purpose built. I’m living with my husband, Allan, and my daughter has moved out, she’s old enough now. Why did you move to New Zealand? It was mainly family reasons. My husband is from New Zealand and his family lived here so that was the first place we settled. Christchurch is close to the sea and mountains. I love the South Island, we do lots of tramping and kayaking. I used to live in Lyttelton and in the beginning we lived in Riccarton. We always wanted to stay by the Port Hills and it [Heathcote Valley] seemed a very nice spot. How did you and your husband meet? We met in Germany. We lived in Germany for about two to three years before we decided to go to

New Zealand, I think I was about 24 or 25. I’m becoming a New Zealand citizen this year, I’ve decided I’ve now been living in New Zealand over half of my lifetime, it was time to make the change. I have no idea when the ceremony is but it is sometime this year. Then I will be a full-blown Kiwi! And you are an artist, how long have you been doing that? Since I can remember. I used to work for the tourism industry but I have always been producing art. I paint oil and I’m a print maker. I stopped my other work about seven years ago and produce art full time now. I was doing marketing for Christchurch & Canterbury Tourism, I also worked in the visitor centre in central Christchurch. I did a few years contracted for Tourism New Zealand as training co-ordinator for South Island visitors centres. It was fun.

WILD IMAGINATION: When Gaby Reade is not working on her art, she loves spending time in the garden. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN Why did you stop doing that to take up art full time? I was missing my creative artwork too much, my ordinary daily work took over me. I need to be creative in order to be happy. I would rather earn less money and be happy. What are you working on now? At the moment over the last two to three years I’ve been illustrating Brothers Grimm fairy tales. I had an exhibition in February at the Tin Palace in Lyttelton that went well. I do solar etchings, it’s like an exposure by the sun. I bind them into books or frame the prints.

At the moment what I’m doing is frog prints from the original story The Frog King. In this story, the princess throws the frog at the wall because she is so frustrated, he falls down and then turns into the prince. There are 20 illustrated drawings that will be put into a hand-bound book. I usually do an edition of about five books so they are very rare. How many fairy tales have you done so far? This is my fifth one, there’s an endless supply. I really enjoy it. The Grimm fairy tales have quite a dark side to them. Bluebeard

is one and the woman opens the room and all of his previous killed wives are there. So the art is not all focused on children, they all pick up a darker side in the human. They are more sort of collectors’ items. So far I have worked on The Shoemaker and the Elves, Bluebeard, The Fisherman and His Wife, Rapunzel and The Frog Prince. Why Brothers Grimm fairy tales? I grew up with them. I started reading them from an early age and I was always fascinated by them. I read lots of books.

memories of Grimm fairy tales The Brothers Grimm fairy tales are all collected, they didn’t write them. They take up quintessence in all of us and they live forever. I came across it [the idea] by accident and it all fell into place. There’s a scholar called Jack Zipes and he published a book of original Brothers Grimm stories. I came across that book and it just struck a chord with me. Then I just chose a story, The Shoe Maker and the Elves, because I thought I would start with a short one. What is your favourite? Just the one I’m working on always. I did The Fisherman and his Wife and I love that one. It is each story I do at the time. I’ve got a big book on the Brothers Grimm and I find one and work on it. There are hundreds to choose from, but I do like the darker ones, I don’t know why but I’m drawn to them. Do you think that fairy tales are a lot tamer these days? What do you think of that? Fairytales have been and are modified and changed all the time. Some are also adopted into more modern tales and films like Into the Woods and Little Red Riding Hood and have been used over and over again by authors and film makers alike. I don’t mind that they are. It allows me the freedom of my own interpretation when illustrating them. I do try and stay as close to the original published stories as possible. To me fairy tales are as relevant today as they were many centuries ago they are timeless reflections of

basic human fears, beliefs, dreams and emotions. A feast for me to explore in my work. What sort of art was your speciality? I was primarily focusing on oil painting, I was always drawn to the painting side of things. I do a lot of drawing. But at the moment mainly illustrations and printing. What do you like about it? That is a hard question. I guess it’s diving into a world that’s a bit unpredictable, you try to control it with planning everything, but it can sometimes be quite different to what you expected. It’s very exciting the whole creative process

from start to end. It takes on a life of its own and characters take on a life of their own. It’s a very exciting journey to work on, I’m just going with the flow. It must be hard to illustrate characters that are already well known, how do you decide what they will look like? I sometimes do come across people on the street and I am continuously bombarded by images. People watching is also great! Most of the characters just form in my mind, I also go back and look at other artists’ works as well. One of my favourite artists was Käthe Kollwitz from the mid-20th

CASHED SETTLED by EQC or insurance

century. She did a lot of charcoal drawings, her work was mainly about the human condition. She lived in a poorer area and did a lot of drawings of people and how they lived. How long does it take you to do each piece? Well they are not very big, the frog ones are only about 15cm x 15cm. I do larger scales as well but they are for life drawings. They take me a few days to get them completely right. Do you do a lot of sketches and planning before you start each piece? Oh yes, I sometimes do around four or five sketches before I start. Sometimes I start straight away and I discard it and start a new one. I have heard a lot of writers

or artists get lightbulb ideas at random times and have to run off to write them down, does that happen to you? Yes I do, I’ve got lots of notes everywhere in my studio. I’m actually incredibly organised in the studio, but that’s just me. Any ideas on what you might move onto after Brothers Grimm? No, I’m just focusing on this at the moment, I never worry about that. Aside from your art, what are some of your other hobbies? Oh I love gardening, I’ve got quite a big garden. JK draws the laughs

All Blacks legend and antidepression campaigner Sir John Kirwan spoke to students from four schools at Christchurch Boys’ High on Thursday. Reporter Andrew King went along to listen

He has personally ventured down a dark path then came back to the light – Sir John Kirwan has been the face of tackling depression for many years now. On Thursday, he spoke to students from four schools in Christchurch Boys’ High’s ‘big room’ letting them know that even people who look on top of the world can be struck with the illness known as depression. He started by getting everyone off their seats and shaking off the blues by dancing around reducing the whole room to laughter. “Did you see what happened there?” he asked the students. “There was laughter and smiles all over the room. Sometimes it is just that simple.” Then he asked everyone to find three people they didn’t know and give them a hug. Laughter erupted again as students scrambled about to find three strangers to embrace. “Some days you need that. You need to reach out and get a hug. Maybe not always physically but mentally too,” Sir John said. It broke the ice as students from different schools in close quarters felt more at ease with each other

It’s about being better people. “There is a link, a connection that he makes with the kids in the room. “It could be one kid’s life that he has changed, or saved even.” Sir John Kirwan has slowly been moving his way up the country talking about mental illness in schools and communities as a Westpac ambassador.

Airport roads may close BY ANDREW KING

Plane spotters may have to find another place to watch their favourite aircraft land. Plans to close part of Avonhead and Greys Rds beside Christchurch Airport were discussed in a meeting on Monday. A city council spokeswoman said that the commissioner will write a report with a recommendation for the city council to consider. “At this stage it is expected that this will go to the August 27 city council meeting.” The roads currently run between the new business development, Dakota Park, and the airport which makes them a popular place for those who want to see aircraft come and go. Tony McFarlin a keen plane spotter said losing the Avonhead part was not the end of the world but the Greys Rd spot was great to watch aircraft. “Greys Rd is better if they are landing from the south but useless if they are coming in from the north,” he said. Mr McFarlin said that they could set up areas designated specifically for plane spotting like they have overseas. “If you look at other airports around the world they have put in areas for spotters to look at planes,’’ he said. “If they were to put them in here it would make sense from a secu-

Closing the roads will allow the airport to proceed with development at Dakota Park and enable

the company to continue its business operations associated with the extension of airport-related activities in the Special Purpose (Airport) Zone. Christchurch Airport has had designs in the pipeline to extend into Dakota Park which would mean the roads will have to go. Greys Rd would end at the intersection with George Bellew Rd which would provide access to Russley Rd.

Dance crew to battle it out in the Carribean A Papanui dance group has beaten crews from across New Zealand to book themselves a place in the Hip-Hop Unite World Championships. Polaroids competed with nearly 40 skilled and passionate teams across three age groups in Wellington. This was the first taste of national competition, and the first trip away from home, for many of these young people who have perfected their craft at the Zion Studios, in Papanui. The world champs will be held in the Caribbean in December. Polaroids will head to Brisbane to compete at the Battlegrounds competition in October to boost their experience for the Caribbean. Zion Studios manager Carissa Crow is extremely proud of the passion and determination shown by those in the school. “Selection for the world championships was almost an unspoken dream, the biggest ever accolade for Zion,” she said. “It is the result of an enormous amount of commitment and passion that will be inspirational for all of our students.” Zion Studios is a dance school which its part-time staff and supporters put in a lot of unpaid hours to keep costs low enough to make dance accessible to as many

Kindergarten back on site BY ANDREW KING

With the help of the Ministry of Education, the kindergarten relocated to the Kendal Primary School next door. Kidsfirst board member Viv Ruth said the temporary solution turned out to be a bit longer than anticipated. “It’s just so wonderful to be here some four years later, gathering to welcome our tamariki and whanau back into the original building, which is now stronger than ever,” she said. To celebrate the strong connection the kindergarten has with

Kidsfirst kindergarten on Kendal Ave has moved back into its original site four years after having to shift. Kidsfirst management staff and teachers joined members of the community to officially reopen the building, which has been structurally strengthened and refurbished. The building was first opened in 1961, where it continued to operate for 50 years until the earthquakes struck.

its surrounding community and whanau, the ribbon was cut by the Murchison family, whose ties with the kindergarten stretch back two generations. Colin Murchison and partner Pippa McBreary have a son Preston, 4, who goes to the same kindergarten that his mother and uncle also attended. Her older son, Joel, also went to Kendal Ave. “The kindy has always been a comfortable place for her family and her boys,” Ms McBreary said.

MOTHER AND SON: Sam Liken and Anne Sophie Duprels play mother and son in the opera Madame Butterfly. PHOTO: Neil Mackenzie-NZ Opera Performing in an opera at the age of eight is a dream come true for one Cotswold School pupil. Sam Liken has scored a role in Puccini’s Madame Butterfly opera that was performed in the refurbished Isaac Theatre Royal. He plays Cio-Cio San’s child Dolore (“Sorrow”) in his first operatic performance. Sam is the youngest performer and doesn’t have a speaking role and appeared in three scenes in the second half of the opera. He had the opportunity to take his classmates to visit the Isaac Theatre Royal and show them where he would be performing

and even took them backstage. Sam also told his classmates that he had an understudy who would perform if he was unable to. Backstage he was able to show his classmates the curtains and props used in the performance. There have been some pretty late nights while he was performing, but his teacher has been very understanding. Sam’s favourite scene was the flower duet as well as the humming chorus because he liked the music. He has been in other shows and enjoys performing on stage.

Disengaged teens taste of opera get second chance at education

MAKE-UP: Sam Liken, 8, is performing in the opera Madame Butterfly at the Issac Royal Theatre. Below: Sam shows his classmates the role he is playing.

Christchurch teenagers once disengaged with the schooling system have the chance to experience an array of short courses through a programme starting in the city. The 20-week course, #Ultimate, was launched at Trainme (Vision College campus) last month with the purpose of giving students aged 16-19 a taste of many different careers at no cost. During the course, #Ultimate students undertake up to eight short courses, including quad bikes, tractors, barista training, chainsaws and childcare; eventually gaining a National Certificate in Employment Skills. #Ultimate head of school, Hannah Fick, said #Ultimate is truly unique, with no other higher education options in the Central South Island offering such a vast number of combined short courses at once. “These are students who had not even achieved NCEA Level 1, typically dislike school, and for some, the prospect of further education was once very bleak,” she said. “#Ultimate provides them with a learning environment that is simultaneously fun, educational

ACCOMPLISHMENT: Trainme tutor Hannah Fick and two #Ultimate Hamilton students. and attention-grabbing. “They are even coached through the next level of their driver’s licence theory and gain their OSH forklift licence,” she said. “We’re confident that we can help give hope and save lives by giving once-disengaged students another chance at education and subsequently, employment” she said. Already the course has enrolled 18 students for the first 20-week block. “We couldn’t have hoped for a better response from kids

who were once disinterested in learning,” she said. The course is being launched following remarkable success at the Hamilton Trainme campus. “#Ultimate was launched in Hamilton last year and 20 out of the 23 students that completed the first course are now either full-time employed or enrolled in higher education. • Enrolments for Christchurch’s debut #Ultimate course are under way now. ORGANIC HORTICULTURE COURSES

Instruction in organic horticulture is now well established at the Lincoln-based Organic Training College. The next year-long course, which begins on 17th August, will be the eighth intake for the college. Students need no prior qualifications or experience to commence Year One and can study full or parttime. Those who have some horticultural background can go straight into Year Two. An added appeal of the course is that all fees are under $500, and full time students are eligible to apply for a loan or allowance through Studylink.

Course Director Bill Martin says it works well to start the course year in the spring. “The organic horticulture course is all about growing so we want to start the course in spring when it is the right time to begin planting.” Year One students get plenty of hands on training in subjects such as sowing and planting organic crops, soil management

and composting. The Year Two students have the option of using land and facilities on the Biological Husbandry Unit (BHU) Farm to grow and sell their own certified produce – a semicommercial venture that gives students a real taste of organic horticulture as a business. The students grow vegetables under the guidance of a mentor and sell them at a weekly stall at Lincoln University. “The Year 2 programme gives the students experience in a commercial environment without any risk. It’s the icing on the cake for a lot of the students here,” says Bill Martin.

ORGANIC Horticultural Courses

As well as the year-long organic horticulture courses a distance (correspondence) programme in organics is also available.

The Biological Husbandry Unit Organics Programmes

The Organic Training College is located at the Biological Husbandry Unit at Lincoln University. There are 10 hectares of certified organic land as well as greenhouses, tunnel houses and research areas.

School play has Great Expectations Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ 2015 production is all set to go this week. This year’s adaptation is of Charles Dickens’ novel, Great Expectations. It has been adapted by New Zealand playwright Dean Parker. It is being produced and directed by teacher Ken Hudson who has extensive experience in theatre and whose own work has been produced throughout New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom. The Shirley Boys’ and Avonside Girls’ production of Pip’s odyssey is making the most of the atmosphere. The production will feature haze machines, fog machines and dry ice in front of a backdrop of draped netting in overlapping layers of white and black. Music has been carefully chosen to enhance and capture the

atmosphere. Works by Chopin, Schubert, Elgar, Beethoven and many other popular 19th-century composers paint a soundscape to match the visual moods. The novel itself was began as a serialisation in Dickens’ own weekly periodical All The Year Round in 1860. It is only the second story after David Copperfield to be narrated in the first person. Narration is featured throughout the play but not by Pip himself. Unusually there are several narrators, all of whom speak in the first person. Great Expectations runs for four performances, from tomorrow through to Friday in the Shirley Boys’ school hall. Performances begin at 7.30pm and tickets can be purchased for $5 from the Shirley Boys’ student office.

Winter conditions continue with a large number of car crashes during the week including several where vehicle occupants have been trapped and in need of extrication. I know it’s easy to say and we hear it continually from police when they are interviewed by the media but some of the things that cause no problems in summer border on stupidly dangerous on icy or wet roads. Most of us don’t go out in the car expecting to end our journey in a mangled wreck, yet too many drive in a way that they should be. It’s winter. Drive accordingly. Another winter phenomenon occurred in Cranford St last Thursday where a fire crew turned out to a wheelie bin on fire. Mostly this occurs at night time and the cause is the deliberate actions of morons who think it’s funny. This occasion, however, the cause was fire ash neatly disposed of in the wheelie bin. Obviously, the fire had not been out for more than five days. Because this is the period of time it can retain enough heat to start fire. Just a couple of kitchen fires this week. However, in these incidents, at New Brighton and Broomfield, people got enough smoke or were burnt enough to be taken to hospital. If a fire is too big to be controlled, get out. Shut the door. This was not always the case but companies like Care on Call are investing heavily in training, meeting national standards and only recruiting carers who have their backgrounds verified and police records checked to make this a secure and realistic possibility. The advantages of staying in your own home are well known but include the familiarity of your own surroundings and being among the community networks that you have established over a long period. This can assist in maintaining your quality of mind and outlook. And even if you’re not as mobile as once, with a bit of carer support you can extend your period of

independence significantly. Many studies have demonstrated that staying at home has a positive effect compared to other options. Even if you’re not requiring ongoing care and simply require support for a short period, for example if you are recuperating after an illness or accident you should never feel isolated or unsupported. In addition, should your principal carer require some respite or is unavailable, there are options to ensure you maintain your quality of life. Prior to care commencing with Care on Call, you will be introduced to a carer to ensure there is ‘the right fit’, and should you need to change carers or appointment times this can be done over the phone or email. A care plan will also be prepared prior to care commencing with you and your family to ensure we have all the details required to ensure a safe and successful relationship. Deep Water Opening at The Tannery

mages of lost Christchurch were put on display on July 28 when photographer Sabin Holloway opened his latest exhibition Deep Water at The Tannery. Suspended from the ceiling, the large prints command attention and dominate the atrium. City places which are now largely just memories live again in stark and dramatic black and white to catch the eyes of shoppers and visitors. The visual record of the post-earthquake red zone is comprised of previously unseen photos and will be on display at The Tannery for approximately one month.

Papanui’s Past

17

Home countries remembered through names of streets BY CHRISTINE GRANT In this the second in a series about the memorial avenues of Papanui we look at Claremont Ave, Norfolk St, Perry St, Scotston Ave and Tomes Rd. The original rural sections, 302 and 276, were next to each other, bounded by Percival St, Papanui Rd and Mays Rd. The Crown grant for RS 302, of 50 acres, was first taken up by Charles Hawkins Greenstreet who arrived in New Zealand in 1853. He sold to William Thomson who had acquired the lease on the neighbouring 50 acres, being RS 276. He named this 100 acres “Scotstoun” thought to be after the ship-building yard on the Clyde near Glasgow. After Thomson’s death in 1886 his 50 acres were sold. Later when Thomas Ingham Joynt bought the property he changed the name to “Finglas” the name of a suburb in Dublin, meaning ‘clear streamlet’. In 1881, 64 sections were advertised for sale in the ‘New Township of Finglas”. This was advertised as the “healthiest, highest and the most convenient suburb of Christchurch” Claremont Ave. RS 276 was owned by Thomas Tomes who was an absentee owner until the 1870s. His Crown grant was taken up by his attorney Felix Wakefield

OPEN FOR BUSINESS: Resident Muriel Finley and Dr Mark Winter cut the ribbon to open the new lounge at Bupa’s Bethesda Rest Home and Hospital in Bishopdale.

ROADING HISTORY: Scotston Ave in Papanui was known as Worcester St before being changed. and this would possibly account for the naming of Wakefield Ave that later sub-divided the property. Re-naming took place in 1948 but why Claremont Ave? Claremont House is a large 18thcentury mansion near Esher in Surry, England, at one time owned by the Royal Family. Queen Victoria bought it for her youngest son, Leopold, Duke of Albany when he married. In 1931 it became a school for girls of Christian Science families. During World War 2 they were evacuated to Wales and the property was let to the Hawker Aircraft Company. It was later reverted back to a school. Norfolk St. Also sub-dividing RS 276 was Fisher St named after Robert Fisher Tomes (1856 – 1923) a son of Thomas Tomes. The re-naming took place in 1905, maybe to resolve confusion with Fisher Ave on the other side

of the city. The significance with Norfolk has not been discovered. Perry St. Westby Brook Percival purchased lots 18 and 19 of RS 302 in the early 1880s. Percival was a lawyer and soon advertised “17 acres of potato land for tender.” The roadway leading to “Westby Percival Estate” was called Percival St. It first appears in street directories in 1915. 1926 when 21 streets were re-named this became Perry St named after the Rev Canon Charles Elliott Perry who was the vicar of St Michaels Anglican Church (1916 – 1936). Scotston Ave. The Tomes family was from Offenham in the County of Worcestershire, England. Worcester St was the name given to what is now Scotston Ave returning the original name of the property to the area. Tomes Rd. Named after this first family to own RS 276.

New lounge will benefit rest home residents Residents and staff at Bupa’s Bethesda Rest Home and Hospital in Bishopdale have celebrated the much anticipated opening of a new lounge. Dr Mark Winter opened the lounge as the guest of honour, cutting the ribbon with Muriel Finley, a resident who has lived at Bethesda for 12 years. “Dr Winter works closely with us here at Bethesda. He knows our residents and staff well, so we are delighted that he is able to help us celebrate,” rest home manager Chris McCulloch said. The new space, named the Camellia

At the Christchurch City Council we are reviewing our District Plan, which has rules about how you can use, develop, and protect your land and buildings.

We welcome your feedback on stage three of the proposed plan – in the form of a submission. Tell us whether you support or oppose the proposed plan; which parts you are referring to and what you would like to see if you don’t agree with our proposals.

The rules are there to ensure we sustainably manage our district’s resources, providing for the needs of our community while managing the effects of our activities. You need to know what is being proposed in the review, so you can understand how it might affect the use of your land or your property rights in the future. Got a question or need help? If you are unsure about anything in the proposed Christchurch Replacement District Plan or are having difficulty using the online plan, you can contact us for help. EXCESS CANDIDA? pain out of arthritis to food intolerances, poor health, allergies and susceptibility to asthma. The immune system becomes weak and colds, influenza and chronic infections occur often. The Candida yeast often enters the blood stream as a fungus. In the bloodstream it travels around the body to places where the environment is suitable for it to inhabit. Symptoms will vary depending on its location in the body. If it enters the brain, it can cause depression, anxiety and foggy thinking. Some researchers believe the Candida fungus can release a pleomorphic micro-organism or virus whose form changes depending on its environment. This is believed to be a factor in cancer and other chronic health conditions. However it is the body’s weakened immune system and toxic environment that is the real cause of disease. Candida imbalances in the gut can be reversed fairly easily with correct nutritional supplementation and care with the diet and lifestyle. Cleansing the Candida fungus and its resultant toxins from the body can require a bit more effort and may take some months. However when this is achieved a great burden will have been removed from your body resulting in more optimal health. The Natural Health Advisers at Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy can provide a detailed nutritional protocol to cleanse the body and improve your overall health and wellbeing. Talk to us today as we are always happy to help! Marshall’s Health & Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, phone 388 5757.

Although arthritis is a serious health condition with no known cure, you can do a lot to make coping with it easier.

I

t may surprise you, but moving is one of the best pain relievers. We used to think that people with arthritis should rest their joints but we now know that resting can increase the pain. Gentle exercise is vital to managing arthritis pain successfully. Exercise helps relieve pain and stiffness, and increases joint flexibility. It also increases muscle strength, and strong muscles help support and protect knees and hips, and also improve balance and mobility. Movement also increases circulation, and improving circulation may improve numerous other problems, including the condition of pain–affected limbs. Keep moving even while you sit. While exercise may be important, it’s not something which particularly appeals in wintery weather and especially if every movement is painful. This is where the AirCycle exerciser comes in. The AirCycle enables you to keep joints

and muscles moving while you watch TV or work at a desk. The exercises promote circulation, strengthen muscles and help keep your joints “oiled”. Designed to ease the pain and stiff joints of arthritis sufferers, the AirCycle also helps people with other conditions (see advert). AirCycles are available in pharmacies at around $35. For more information and orders, visit www.aircycle.co.nz or phone 04 569 5013.

A causative factor for all these symptoms and more can be a yeast organism called Candida albicans. It is often underestimated what a profound effect it can have on our health and wellbeing. It is estimated around 70 per cent of people have a Candida overgrowth in their intestines, mouths or on their skin. It is normal and beneficial to have some Candida in the gut where it is normally kept under control by the good gut bacteria or probiotics that feed on this yeast. However using antibiotics without probiotic supplementation, sickness, poor diet, insufficient stomach acid and medications are some of the common factors that can allow the Candida to thrive. The tentacles of Candida can penetrate the intestinal wall over time, causing inflammation and leaky gut, leading

Get rid of dampness in your house

Now with the colder and wetter weather on its way, homeowners are focusing on ways to make their homes comfortable, warm and healthy for their families throughout winter.

R

ising damp is an issue that affects many of our older properties which suffer from poor, or no, insulation. In Canterbury especially, postquake, many people have relocated to homes that suffer from rising damp, which can be associated with health problems. Independent tests have shown that up to 40 litres of water can rise from the ground and enter a house every day, leading to mildew, mould, condensation and musty smells. Moulds can produce various allergic reactions and the frail, elderly and very young are especially vulnerable. Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd is a locally owned and operated firm. The team understands the problems caused by rising damp and are there to help. They will come to your damp home and pump a lightweight,

flowable foam concrete under your timber floored home. Specially adapted for our New Zealand conditions and applications, it provides a layer of protection against rising moisture. An unexpected benefit that the team at Canterbury Foam Concrete have noticed recently is that many owners of properties which had underfloor foam concrete installed, reported that it also provided protection against liquefaction after the earthquakes. Contact Canterbury Foam Concrete Ltd now for your free, no obligation quote and complimentary appraisal of your underfloor ventilation needs. Phone 03 376 4608 or 0508 362 626 for more information.
